☼  The vines are waking up for spring!.

Our European varietals (like the Pinots, Chardonnay, Gewurtz) get buried under pyramids of earth for the winter. We call this "hilling-up". We haven't de-hilled yet because we want to get closer to the May 'frost window' before taking the gamble. This is a nerve-wracking time of year in grape-growing. Some vineyards have de-hilled. We're waiting.

We're installing one frost fan this year to add protection to part of our 20-acres.

The cold-hardier mixed-heritage vines (like the Frontenac, Marquette) are being pruned and tied up on the trellis. We don't have to bury them.

We've had an exceptionally wet spring so far. That slows us down in the vineyards and makes de-hilling difficult. Otherwise, All signs are good!
